The Beaumont Hotel London
Resurrection Of Prewar Mayfair’s Art Deco
The Beaumont, Jeremy King and Chris Corbin’s first hotel, occupies a GradeII Listed building by famed 20s architects Wimperis & Simpson. It is located in the heart of London’s Mayfair. The interiors of the hotel, inspired by the building and its surroundings, encapsulate the elegance, glamour and personalised hospitality of prewar Mayfair, evoking in detail the uniquely rich aesthetics of the time.
There are many antique and vintage pieces sourced over a period of a few years scattered throughout the hotel, including consoles, credenzas, card tables, pendant lights, table lamps and objets d’art, as well as a huge collection of original art, posters and photographs, dating from the early 1900s to the mid 1950s. Most of the unique antique pieces of furniture and works of art were sourced by owner Jeremy King, supported by Lauren Gurvich Vintage.
Antony Gormley’s ROOM forms the bedroom of a single suite. An alluring, mysterious space, its creation allowed the artist to‘sculpt darkness’, encouraging its guests to enjoy a meditative moment of withdrawal from the busy world outside. Gormley’s ROOM is both a monumental cuboid sculpture based on the artist’s body and an architectural extension to the hotel. The interior, entirely clad in dark fumed oak, is approached by nine white marble steps through a black velvet curtain from a strongly contrasting white marble bathroom. Adjacent to ROOM is a sitting room with large hallway and bathroom, decorated, like all the rooms in The Beaumont, in a discreet Art Deco style.
The public areas are adorned with vintage lamps and sconces, objets d’art, and art from the 1920s and 1930s predominantly. There are numerous panthers and tigers in bronze on marble or onyx bases; French Art Deco credenzas in Macassar ebony; cocktail cabinets and drinks carts. The bedrooms feature black & white photographs, with notable large panoramas above the beds, mostly depicting group and crowd scenes from the 20s and 30s, whether of American beach belles, High School reunions or sporting events.
The Beaumont’s presidential suite, which can be opened up to incorporate five bedrooms, evokes the glamorous era of the great Transatlantic liners. With an expansive sitting room and a separate dining room seating eight, plus a pantry kitchen and guest bathroom, it features cream lacquer panelling, parquet flooring, a working fireplace and a large terrace overlooking Brown Hart Gardens. Hugely versatile and supremely comfortable, the suite can also be arranged to incorporate the entire presidential floor of the hotel, in total privacy and security.
The walls of the American Bar are entirely covered by over 300 black & white photographs of prominent public figures from the fields of the theatre, literature, cinema, music, design, sports, as well as the media, politics, business and commerce, and notorious society figures, who all might have frequented the establishment from the midTwenties to the midFifties.
